SCOLIOSIS

Scoliosis is an abnormal lateral or sideways curvature of the spine.
It is first usually detected in early teen years.  Scoliosis is more
common in females than males.   Doctors believe that there is  a
hereditary factor that predisposes people to this condition.

There are many different causes for scoliosis, 70-80% are idiopathic,
meaning the cause is unidentifiable.  Not all scoliosis are
progressive, meaning some will stop increasing at some point.  This is
why early detection is crucial, to monitor and to treat.  Children
should be examined before age 12-13 esp. if there is a history of
scoliosis in the family.    In severe cases the distortion can affect
surrounding organs such as the lungs and heart, cause neurologic
problems and arthritis.

Visual signs include a change in posture,  uneven shoulder height and
/or uneven hips.  If bent over you might even see one side of the back
or rib cage higher or raised when compared to the other side, referred
to as rib humping.

The Doctor of Chiropractic thru exam and xrays  will be able to detect
the degree and severity of the scoliosis.  Our goal is to maintain
joint flexibility, decrease muscle stiffness and pain and help the
patient maintain a normal and healthy life style.  In some instances,
correction can take place, depending on the reasons of the scoliosis.
Chiropractic is a safe approach and has had excellent results in
treating scoliosis.

Have you had your child checked for scoliosis?
